GROUND IMPROVEMENT FOR A LOCOMOTIVE FACTORY

•Despite the very low temperature (4 degrees and similar) and foggy conditions, the entire 100,000 square meters ground improvement works were completed in 5 months schedule .
Madhepura Electric Locomotive Private Limited (MELPL), a consortium of Indian Railways and Alstom, was developing an Electric locomotive factory at Madhepura, Bihar. The proposed facility involves construction of factory area and associated residential township. Keller was commissioned by the main contractor to design and execute vibro compaction works to support foundations at the proposed facility.
The soil condition at the proposed site was predominantly sandy due to alluvial river deposit. The Selection of a right foundation technique satisfying the liquefaction mitigation criteria and then arranging the construction resources to suit the project time line were the main challenges .
Considering the challenges associated with the project and the proven local experience in similar soil conditions, Keller designed Vibro compaction technique as an alternative to the conventional technique. This helped to reduce the construction time considerably as well allowed the main contractor to start the concrete works within seven days of area handover. The global strength of Keller played a vital role in mobilizing the specialized Vibrofloats from Germany within a month of the award to meet the project milestones.
